Why Pin Potential is worth it for me

An honest look at learning Pinterest as a creative business owner

           I came for Pinterest.
I stayed for the way it fits into my life and my work.

I joined Pin Potential because I wanted to understand Pinterest. Properly.

Not just which pin size to use. Not another checklist of “do this, don’t do that.” I was looking for a way to make Pinterest part of my business that actually made sense. Something that worked with the kind of work I do and the kind of business I want to build, instead of sitting on top of it like another obligation.

Before Pin Potential, my approach lived somewhere between good intentions and vague plans. I knew Pinterest could matter. I just didn’t yet know how to work with it in a way that felt strategic instead of reactive.

It also became clear very quickly that this wasn’t a course about posting.

           It’s a program about thinking.

           About outcomes instead of activity.
About systems instead of scattered effort.
About building something that can grow while you’re busy living the rest of your life.

Yes, we talk about keywords. About content. About structure. About what Pinterest actually is and how it actually works. But those pieces are never presented as isolated tricks. They’re always placed into a bigger picture: what are you building, who is it for, and what do you want this work to do over time?

Somewhere along the way, my internal questions changed.

I stopped circling around “What should I post?” and started asking myself, “What am I planting?”

What kind of work do I want quietly building in the background?
What kind of traffic fits what I make?
What kind of growth supports the way I actually want to work?

Pin Potential gave me the building blocks for that. And structure. And a way to test, observe, adjust, and keep going without the constant feeling that I’m somehow late to my own business.

Which, if we’re honest, is worth a lot more than a pin template.
(Though yes, Meagan does provide those too.)

Meagan, the way she teaches, and why that matters

A big part of why Pin Potential works the way it does is Meagan herself.

She comes from a background in psychology and education, and you feel that in every call. Not in a loud way. In the way the questions are framed. In how answers are unpacked. In how often nuance is allowed to exist instead of being flattened into a one-size-fits-all rule.

One of her most common replies is, “It depends.”

Not as an evasion. As a starting point.

Because real businesses don’t grow on formulas. They grow on context. On goals. On seasons. On the very real humans running them. Meagan teaches Pinterest inside that reality, not on top of it.

She’s also deeply grounded in what she teaches. She’s a Pinterest-recognized expert who has even run workshops for the platform’s own teams. And that depth is expanded through excellent guest experts she regularly brings into the program. Sessions on things like SEO, strategy, and business foundations widen the lens and place Pinterest where it belongs: inside a much broader creative business ecosystem.

Meagan talks fast. Not because she’s rushing. But because there is a lot of substance in every session. You don’t leave a call with a motivational quote. You leave with better questions. With clearer thinking. With things you can actually go and try.

There’s also a strong practical layer running through the program. Frameworks, tools, and working resources that help translate insight into action. Not overwhelm. Not busywork. But things you can return to, use, and adapt as your business evolves.

What I’ve come to value most is her objectivity. The feedback isn’t designed to flatter. It’s designed to help. It’s rooted in data, experience, and a real understanding of how platforms and human behavior intersect.

Because Pin Potential doesn’t just teach you what to do.
It teaches you how to decide.

And that changes the feeling of the work in a very real way.

           Pinterest, re-framed

Before Pin Potential, Pinterest was a challenge I felt I couldn’t quite conquer on my own.

I knew I should probably tackle it. People told me it wasn’t that difficult. That I should just start posting and I’d figure it out as I went. But that approach never sat well with me. I didn’t just want to do Pinterest. I wanted to understand it. I wanted to know why certain things work, how they connect, and how this platform could genuinely support the kind of creative business I’m building.

One of the most surprising things about Pin Potential has been how much it changed both how I look at the work and how I feel about it.

Instead of trying to make sense of Pinterest in isolation, I found myself surrounded by other business owners asking thoughtful questions, sharing what they were seeing, and talking honestly about what was and wasn’t working.

That alone softened the whole process.

The Pin Potential community isn’t loud. It isn’t performative. It isn’t built around quick wins or viral moments. It’s built around questions. Around shared experiments. Around people comparing notes, results, and lessons learned.

Listening to others’ challenges, seeing how the same principles apply across very different businesses, has been just as valuable as the formal training. It sharpens your own thinking. It reveals blind spots. It reminds you that there isn’t one correct way to grow something well.

And once again, I’m reminded of my garden.

Good gardens rarely grow in isolation. They’re shaped by their environment. By what’s planted nearby. By what’s shared, swapped, and observed.

Pin Potential offers that kind of environment.

A place where Pinterest stops being a mysterious system you’re trying to crack, and becomes a landscape you’re learning to work with, in very good company.

Why I’m still part of Pin Potential

When I joined Pin Potential, I thought I was signing up to learn Pinterest. A bit of a one-and-done deal. Back when I signed up, Meagan was still offering a membership and I didn’t quite understand what that could possibly be about. Surely, once you understand how to post, what format to use, what to look out for when writing titles and post copy, it wouldn’t make sense to keep attending calls.

           Boy, was I wrong.

Yes, I learned all of the above. But I also found targeted guidance, strategic mentorship, and a way of thinking that continues to support my business.

That’s what I value most about this program. Not just what it teaches, but how it teaches you to look. To observe. To adjust. To let things grow.

I wouldn’t recommend Pin Potential to someone looking for shortcuts.

But if you’re building a creative business, and you care about understanding what you’re doing and why, this is a program I genuinely trust.

And that’s why I still look forward to every call.

           FYI:

Choosing a word to guide my creative year

An Idea I Circled For Years

For years, I circled the idea of choosing a word of the year.

It always appealed to me. There was something about it that felt gentler than setting goals, less rigid than mapping out milestones. A word seemed like a direction rather than a demand, a way of orienting yourself without turning your life into a checklist.

And yet, every January, I stopped just short of choosing one.

I read the thoughtful posts. I saved a few. I nodded along while other creatives shared the words guiding their year. Then I closed the tab and carried on planning projects, mapping out seasons, organizing collections. I tended to the practical pieces of my work but never paused to name the larger thread tying it all together.

Part of the hesitation was simple overthinking. Choosing a word felt like one more decision to get right. One more opportunity to spiral into analysis. It seemed easier to keep moving than to sit still long enough to listen.

This year, though, something shifted. Not dramatically. Not in a reinvention sort of way. The shift felt quieter than that, steadier.

A year ago, my life felt full of loose ends humming quietly in the background. Some were practical. Some were emotional. Some carried that low hum of uncertainty that follows you even when you are trying to focus. Toward the end of 2025, many of those tabs closed. Not with fanfare, just gradually. And in the space that remained, a different question surfaced.

Instead of asking what needed fixing, I found myself wondering what deserved to grow.

That question changed the tone entirely. Instead of reaching for goals, I found myself wanting a word.

The Rabbit Hole (And The Almost-Dictionary Moment)

I had considered this practice before, but freedom can be strangely paralyzing. There are endless lists of words and so many articles promising transformation. Carefully curated collections of possibilities lined up like paint swatches, each one beautiful in its own way.

At one point, I even considered choosing a word from the dictionary. I love books. I love paper. I loved the romance of flipping pages and letting a word “find” me. But of course I also knew that - even though I might end up with a lovely word - this way of going about it was not going to help me find a word that felt true to me.

Scrolling through lists kept me in comparison mode. I was trying words on the way you try on clothes in harsh lighting, wondering if they suited me instead of asking whether they reflected me.

What I needed was not more options. I needed a compass to guide me through the forest of words I'd trapped myself in.

Using AI as a Sounding Board

So instead of opening another book or article. I opened a conversation.

AI has become part of my creative process. I use it to brainstorm, to workshop ideas, to untangle half-formed thoughts before they become something visual. It sits alongside my sketchbooks and notes apps, another place where I can think out loud.

So I approached this the same way. Not as a search, but as a dialogue.

I began describing what was actually on my mind: how full my life feels, how much I want to grow this year, how important clarity has become to me. I answered questions. I pushed back on suggestions. I tried certain words out loud and paid attention to my reaction.

Slowly, the process stopped being about finding an impressive word and started being about honesty.

What kind of growth do I really want? Where do I feel ready, and where do I feel stretched thin? What has the past year resolved? How do I want the creative house I'm building to feel when someone steps into it?

That exchange did something scrolling never could. It reflected my own thoughts back to me. It slowed the noise. It gave me space to hear myself more clearly before turning feelings into decisions.

            The word that stayed was

           expand

, and it immediately felt spacious rather than forceful.

It did not demand reinvention or turn growth into a performance. Instead, it suggested opening. Making room. Allowing what already exists to stretch outward in a way that feels supported.

Almost immediately, I could see how many parts of my life fit inside it. My creative work. My audience. My confidence. The systems behind the scenes that keep everything moving. Even my sense of possibility.

Expand could mean letting what already exists grow deeper roots while also reaching a little further. It held both stability and movement, which is the balance I want for my design business. Playful and vibrant on the surface, grounded enough underneath to sustain what is building.

It also reaches beyond work. I see it in tending the garden and watching something slowly take shape. In giving creative ideas enough space to mature. In protecting time for tea and quiet thinking so that growth feels sustainable rather than rushed.

Expand, for me, is not about doing more. It is about choosing what deserves to become more.

            So

           expand

is the word I’m carrying into 2026.

What it Means For The Year Ahead

Carrying this word into 2026 feels less like setting a target and more like setting a tone. It invites me to expand my creative work without treating every idea like an emergency. To expand my audience without sanding down my voice. To expand the systems that support my business so that my energy does not always have to carry the entire weight.

It also encourages expansion in my personal life. More room for focused work. More room for rest. More room for the small, ordinary rituals that make everything else possible.

I can already feel the word becoming a filter. When opportunities arise, I find myself asking whether they expand my art, my reach, or the life I actually want to live. If the answer is no, then it may simply not belong in this season.

           A Direction, Not a Destination

This is the first time I have chosen a word to guide my year, and what surprised me most was not the word itself but the clarity that came from naming it. The process felt less like picking a theme and more like acknowledging the direction I am already leaning toward.

I do not know exactly how expand will shape every corner of 2026. What I do know is how I want it to feel: intentional, grounded, quietly brave, and alive with possibility.

This year isn’t about doing more. It’s about moving forward with intention and giving the right things room to grow.

Behind the Scenes of a Spoonflower Challenge

           From Prompt to Pattern

Some patterns arrive like they know exactly who they are.

Others show up as a vague idea, a deadline, a tiny nudge that quietly asks:

           what if

           ?

Design challenges tend to sound loud and competitive from the outside. In my studio, they usually start much more quietly. A blank canvas. A short prompt. That familiar mix of curiosity and doubt that shows up whenever I begin something new.

What I love most about projects like this is how inspiration often comes from everyday life. From colors I notice in the garden, from seasonal shifts, and from those quiet creative moments that happen in between work, routines, and real life.

This particular pattern began as an entry for a Spoonflower design challenge. What I didn’t know then was that it wouldn’t stop there. It slowly grew beyond that first brief and turned into a full collection of its own.

This is a little look behind the scenes at how that happened.

What a Spoonflower Design Challenge Is (and How I Use It)

Spoonflower is a print-on-demand platform where I publish many of my surface pattern designs and test new ideas out in the open. One of the ways they keep designers moving is through regular design challenges built around specific themes or prompts.

You get a brief. And a deadline. And a very helpful reason to stop circling and start.

Some designers thrive on the competitive side of it. Others are there for the visibility. I use challenges differently.

For me, they’re less about winning and more about momentum.

A clear prompt is like someone quietly pressing “start” when my ideas feel scattered. It takes the pressure off inventing the perfect concept and replaces it with permission to begin. I don’t enter expecting polish. I enter expecting movement.

One idea that pushes me. Sometimes it leads into well-known territory and sometimes into completely unexpected directions. But I'm happy, even excited, to come along for the ride.

Starting Small: Sketches, Color Tests, and Uncertainty

Once I have a prompt, I almost never jump straight into a finished pattern. I start much smaller. Loose sketches. Shape studies. Color notes scribbled in the margins. At this stage, I’m not trying to solve the design. I’m trying to listen.

For this challenge, I found myself drifting toward to mid-century inspired shapes and a palette that felt warm but grounded: coral, mustard, navy. Colors with a quiet hum to them. I played with curves and repetition, testing how different shapes interacted and where a sense of rhythm began to emerge.

While working on these patterns, I kept imagining how they might live in a home, on cushions, fabric, or small everyday details that make a space feel warmer and more personal. I love thinking of patterns not just as designs on a screen, but as part of cozy, lived-in spaces.

There’s always a moment where things feel uncertain. The pattern isn’t there yet, and it’s tempting to abandon it for something easier. I’ve learned to stay a little longer in that phase. That’s usually where the interesting decisions start happening.

Working within a challenge reinforced a few principles I come back to often in my studio practice:

A prompt is a starting point, not a verdict.

Constraints can be useful. They give your attention somewhere to land.

Repetition builds rhythm - both visually and creatively.

Not every experiment needs immediate visibility to matter.

Planning My Year

Planning a Creative Year by Seasons

For a long time, I tried to organize my creative work by the month. January felt full of promise, February carried tidy intentions, and by March there was often a quiet sense that I was already behind. The structure looked reassuring on paper, but in the studio it rarely fit the way creative work actually unfolds.

Ideas do not arrive according to the calendar. Some need time to warm up, to sit on the corner of the desk while I change a color or rethink a motif. Others arrive with urgency and refuse to wait for the “right” month. Some stretches of the year feel expansive and productive, while others feel slower and more reflective. Treating every month as though it should hold the same kind of energy only created unnecessary pressure.

Eventually, I stopped planning my year in months and began planning it in seasons instead. Not in a poetic sense, but in a practical one rooted in energy and rhythm.

Why Seasons Make More Sense Than Months

Months are fixed. Seasons are fluid.

A season gives you direction without boxing you into a narrow timeframe. It allows related types of work to live together instead of being scattered across twelve separate compartments. When I began viewing my year this way, I could see the larger rhythm of my work. I was no longer trying to optimize every week. I was simply asking what this season was meant to hold.

This shift also helped me accept something that used to make me uneasy: working far ahead of the calendar. Designing winter patterns in the middle of summer once felt disjointed. Now it feels natural. Seasonal creative work moves in advance, and planning by seasons acknowledges that truth instead of fighting it.

           Winter: Reflect, Reset, Decide

Winter carries a quieter energy, and I have learned to let my work mirror that tone. This is the season for looking back thoughtfully at what worked and what felt heavy. I review collections, note what resonated, and gently release ideas that no longer feel aligned.

It is also a time for sketching without urgency. Ideas can stay loose. They do not need to become products yet. Winter is about clarity before commitment, about setting direction before making promises.

           Spring: Explore and Experiment

As the light shifts and the days grow longer, curiosity naturally returns. Spring is when I experiment. I test new motifs, explore color palettes that feel slightly unfamiliar, and ask questions without needing immediate answers.

Not every experiment becomes something public. Some are simply creative stretches, ways of keeping my instincts sharp and my process playful. Spring feels generous in that way. It allows room for both blooming ideas and quiet endings.

           Summer: Create and Prepare

By summer, there is usually more momentum. The ideas that proved themselves in spring are ready to be refined and developed with intention. This is when I batch work, finalize collections, and prepare designs for seasons still ahead.

Working on holiday pieces in July no longer feels strange. It feels steady and practical. Summer is about focused creation, about moving projects forward with clarity rather than constant rethinking. The energy is less exploratory and more purposeful.

           Autumn: Finish, Share, Release

Autumn brings a sense of completion. Projects are polished, descriptions are written, and work begins to leave the studio. There is something tender about this stage, about releasing what has lived quietly on my desk and allowing it to find a place in someone else’s home.

It is also a natural moment for evaluation. I notice what felt aligned and what felt rushed. I make small notes for the future. The year begins to gently fold back toward reflection.

           Planning as Support, Not Pressure

Planning by seasons has changed the tone of my creative year. It no longer feels like a system meant to measure my productivity. Instead, it feels like a map that keeps me oriented while still leaving space for flexibility.

I still appreciate seeing the whole year at a glance. There is comfort in understanding where I am within the larger cycle. But I hold the structure lightly. Rather than filling every day with tasks, I focus on the energy of the season I am in and let that guide my work.

When planning supports your rhythm instead of forcing it, creativity feels calmer. There is room to breathe, to notice, and to build a body of work that reflects not just output, but intention.

Slowing Down With Intention

When Plans Slip Away: Why Slowing Down Saved My Creative Year

I went into the final stretch of the year with plans. Not the loud, goal-stacked kind. The quieter version: a sense of direction, a few things I wanted to finish, a rhythm I thought I could rely on.

           And then that rhythm slipped.

Not in a dramatic way. No big turning point. Just a growing mismatch between what I had mapped out and what my energy was actually able to give. The kind that’s easy to ignore at first. The kind many of us are trained to override. For a while, I tried to do exactly that.

When good plans meet real life

From the outside, nothing looked particularly off. The ideas were there. The motivation hadn’t vanished. But the pace I had imagined didn’t materialize. Work happened in shorter windows. Focus arrived in waves instead of long stretches. Recovery took more space than expected.

At some point, it became clear that pushing through wouldn’t create momentum. It would only drain what little reserve I had left.

Creative plans are easy to make in theory. They look clean on paper. But lived time rarely behaves so neatly. Bodies have limits. Days come with existing commitments. And when creative work has to fit into an already full life, ignoring those realities isn’t discipline. It’s wishful thinking.

So I stopped forcing the plan to perform.

Choosing to listen instead of override

Slowing down wasn’t a strategic decision. It was a practical one.

I let go of the idea that the end of the year had to deliver a polished result. I accepted that some projects needed more time than the calendar allowed. And I made peace with the fact that not everything I’d envisioned would make it across the finish line right now.

This project lives alongside the rest of my life. It has to fit into days that are already spoken for. When the body pushes back, pretending otherwise doesn’t make the work stronger. It only makes it heavier.

Adjusting the pace wasn’t about lowering standards. It was about protecting the work and the person making it.

           What slowing down actually changed

Once I stopped trying to catch up, something shifted. The work didn’t disappear. It softened.

I became more selective. Less concerned with output, more attentive to what genuinely held my interest. Repetition stopped feeling like stagnation and started feeling grounding. Small progress counted again.

Instead of chasing momentum, I focused on continuity. Ironically, that’s when things began to move forward. Quietly. Without friction. With less resistance.

           I don’t make New Year’s resolutions. I make plans.

           Planning with intention, not pressure

In practice, this means working in small, repeatable rhythms rather than chasing big milestones. Letting curiosity set the pace instead of urgency. Allowing ideas to stay unfinished until they’re ready to carry their own weight.

It also means being honest about capacity. Creative work doesn’t always need more hours. Sometimes it needs better care within the hours that actually exist.

This way of working won’t impress anyone who equates creativity with constant output. But it’s sustainable. And it leaves room for play, which is where the work I care about tends to grow.

Slowing down didn’t save my year because it fixed everything.

It saved it because it clarified the terms. What deserves my energy. What can wait. What kind of pace I’m willing to keep.

I'll make fewer declarations but clearer plans. And I'll start to better listen to myself. That’s not hesitation. It's simply how I’m choosing to move forward.

Podcasts That Actually Hold My Attention

Finding a Good Podcast can be Hard Work

            Podcast spotlight:

           A Bit of Optimism

            with Simon Sinek

You might know Simon Sinek from Start With Why or his well-known TED talk about the Golden Circle. His podcast, A Bit of Optimism, isn’t about quick tips or productivity hacks. It’s long-form, conversational, and curious.

It feels less like a show and more like sitting in on thoughtful conversations between people who actually enjoy thinking.

There are many episodes by now, so instead of pointing vaguely at “the podcast,” I want to share a few specific ones I’ve listened to more than once — and what made them stay with me.

           Episodes I loved:

            Failing Well

           with Dr. Amy Edmondson

This conversation revolves around failure, but not in the loud, motivational-poster sense. It’s about psychological safety, honesty, and what really allows people to try, stumble, and keep going.

What stayed with me was how quietly radical her perspective is: that failure itself isn’t the point. Learning is. The space around mistakes is where everything happens.

It made me reflect on how often we rush to judge outcomes instead of observing them.

            The Beautiful Brilliance of Boredom

           with Elle Cordova

This one felt like a small exhale.

They talk about boredom not as a problem to solve, but as a mental landscape we’ve almost erased. A place where imagination has room to wander instead of being constantly fed.

I loved how this episode defended stillness, slowness, and mental white space in a world that treats stimulation like oxygen.

It reminded me that some of the best ideas don’t arrive with fireworks. They drift in quietly.

Lee Clow has spent decades shaping some of the most iconic advertising campaigns, and this conversation is full of stories rather than slogans.

This episode has a lighter, playful energy. It weaves between food, creativity, curiosity, and risk.

What I loved most was how much permission lives in this conversation. Permission to experiment, to follow odd ideas, to not know exactly where something will lead.

The conversation jumps between humor, culture, perspective, and the strange ways our minds work. It’s not a neat, linear episode. It’s more like mental parkour.

These are the kinds of podcast episodes I love. Not because they tell me what to do, but because they leave something behind. A thought, a question, a small shift in perspective.

Returning to a Seasonal Favorite

Why Decorative Repetition Feels Grounding (A William Morris Detour)

When energy is low or focus feels fragmented, I don’t always reach for paint or patterns first. Sometimes I start by looking. Slowly. Without an agenda. Letting my eyes do the work before my hands catch up.

That’s how I found myself returning to a book I’ve owned for a while but rarely rush through.

The Twelve Days of Christmas — illustrated with patterns by William Morris.

           A book you wander through

           From looking to making

I don’t believe inspiration always arrives as a spark. Sometimes it arrives as permission. Permission to slow down. To stay with an idea longer. To repeat a motif instead of constantly reinventing it. To trust that depth can come from returning, not just advancing.

Spending time with Morris’s work didn’t send me running back to the studio with a finished idea. It did something quieter. It reminded me that repetition isn’t a lack of imagination. It’s a form of commitment.

And that’s a way of working I keep coming back to.

If you enjoy looking at pattern the way others enjoy reading, this book is a small, indulgent detour. One that rewards wandering, not rushing. Sometimes that’s exactly what the creative process needs.

A Bold Burst of Retro Vibes

Meet "Retro Sunset Geometry" – a mid-century-inspired pattern that brings a nostalgic twist to modern spaces.

This design plays with symmetry, movement, and a distinctly vintage palette to channel the warmth of a 1970s sunset. Think mustard and coral, curves and color, all dancing across a deep navy backdrop. Whether you're into statement cushions, bold wallpaper, or playful fabric projects, this pattern is here to bring retro back in style.

This design started as a sketch inspired by teardrop ceramics and sunset colors from a retro poster I stumbled across at a flea market. The goal? To capture the comforting geometry of vintage patterns with a fresh, lively twist.

The wavy teardrop motif brings rhythm and balance - like a sun setting on repeat - and the palette (navy, coral, peach, mustard) is a nod to that golden-hour glow on a warm summer night. I wanted it to feel like a dance between structure and softness, retro and modern.

Winterberry – A Bright Splash of Red for the Cozy Season

           The Inspiration

It started with a simple walk. I spotted a cluster of bright red berries clinging to bare winter branches, their color glowing against the pale sky. There was something quietly joyful about them, a reminder that nature doesn’t lose its magic when everything else fades to white and grey.

Back in my sketchbook, I began to paint. Each berry took shape in watercolor washes of crimson and coral, layered with soft shadows and tiny stems. The result was a pattern that feels both organic and playful - a little ode to winter’s hidden color palette.

           From Brush to Pattern

Turning this painting into a seamless design was like arranging a dance of color and rhythm. I wanted it to feel light and airy, berries scattered naturally across the surface, just as you’d find them on a snowy walk.

Each cluster was carefully placed to create movement and balance without losing that hand-painted feel. The gentle variations in red tones give it depth and texture, so whether you view it up close or from afar, the watercolor character remains.

To me, these berries represent quiet resilience — beauty that endures through the cold months. They remind us that even in winter, there’s color to be found, waiting just beneath the frost.

           A Whimsical Garden-Inspired Pattern

The inspiration for "Bees Like Pears" came during a warm summer afternoon in the garden. While watching bees buzzing around the fruit trees, I noticed their particular attraction to the ripening pears. There's something magical about that relationship - the industrious bees helping pollinate the trees that will eventually bear the sweet fruits they love. This natural harmony inspired me to capture that moment in a pattern that celebrates both the hardworking pollinators and the delicious fruits of their labor.

I chose a watercolor style to give the pattern a soft, dreamy quality that echoes the warmth of summer days. The golden yellows of the bees complement the fresh greens of the pears, creating a palette that feels both natural and cheerful.

This pattern was designed with versatility in mind! If you're looking to bring a touch of nature-inspired whimsy into your home, "Bees Like Pears" offers the perfect balance of playfulness and sophistication. The watercolor style gives it an artistic quality while the subject matter connects to nature in a meaningful way.
